It is one of my favorite ever!!! I will not go into plot details or anything like that. I would not want to ruin this movie for anyone.

All I can say is if you haven't seen it, you must. What a beautiful love story and a tale of what sacrifice for the one you love really means.

My sister made me watch it the first time and I really didn't want to, but by the end I was in love with it and have since watched it more times than I can count.

As a movie, stand alone and unbiased from the book, it was good. Not great, not bad, just enjoyable. The accents and the mannerisms were either spot on, or a mockery of the South.

The scenery, filming, and set styles were gorgeous and beautifully made. The characters, while based upon the books, were loosely adapted from those characters and allowed minimal depth.

Though I must say that the young man who played the lead character Ethan Wate did an excellent job. While I enjoyed the movie as it is, the screenwriters severely limited any potential franchise possibility by condensing, cropping, and bastardizing a series of books into one film.

Any possibilities for further movies based upon the series was stopped before this movie was ever released. As an adaptation of a book onto the big screen, I have to give this film a dismal 1 star.

The only thing they got right was names, places, and basic single plot even that they severely messed up, especially the ending and the Claiming scene.

Now, no bitter resentments because I "didn't treat the movie fairly". I am sorry, but it was a film adaptation of A BOOK, and the only reason to do that is because the books have a large enough following to warrant the expense of a film.

If you don't treat the source material with respect, then how then do you expect any kind of positive feedback from that same fan base for the movie?

If the books had never existed, and this truly was a standalone film, I would have considered it a nicely done film, pleasant with a loose plot and a seductive cinematography to it.

But that's it. So I purposely made myself read the book before I watched the movie, because I wanted to really understand the world it took place in, and it's a topic I'm a huge fan of.

The book was amazing, the authors created a fantastic world for this timeless romance story to take place. But the I saw the movie and realized what people were complaining about.

No, the movie isn't bad. It's got the most beautiful scenes I've ever seen on screen so far. The acting was also phenomenal.

Not the southern accents - I felt like everyone was overdoing it just a tad. A little too hillbilly. When I realized half the cast was from the UK, I got more respect, because their accents were more proper than the American cast, for whatever reason.

Especially the actress who played Lena. No, the problem lies in the heart of the story - the storytelling itself, and the rewrites.

First off, it feels like the button is held on fast-forward through the entire film. But then it would randomly, awkwardly, slow down on key moments.

Other important story elements were rammed together in an effort to tell a story that should take 4 hours into 2.

This is what made the film suffer so much. It had the perfect cast, it had the special effects budget, it had beautiful art direction, but it didn't have the budget to actually adhere to the story from the book.

In the end it makes changes that cheapen moments, kill long storyline arcs without a thought, and merge character awkwardly or eliminate them altogether.

Even as far as making some who are bad, good. Or so under-utilized that it doesn't matter anyways. Then there's the ending Sure, it would be recoverable for a sequel if they wanted to undo how it ended in the film, but since it didn't do well enough to warrant a sequel, we're stuck with a movie that kills the great story of the book.

I'm usually not a book purist - I loved the Hunger Games movie even after reading the book. I loved Harry Potter films. But this just isn't as salvageable as those are, and I can't make excuses or look past things.

You kill the story, you kill the movie. So unfortunately, it isn't good. Why is it still three stars for me? Those two are saving graces.

Otherwise, I really really hate to say it, but you might appreciate having better memories of these characters written in pages, rather than having their tale torn apart on screen.

I have read the first three books in this series and the books were very good. I liked this series as well as the Twilight series, I am not a hater of either.

I had to see the first movie twice before I made up my mind about how much I liked the movie. The reason was that the movie is different than the book.

I think this is a problem that most people who read the first book had with the movie. I have read so many books that have been made into movies that I have stopped comparing the books to the movies.

I now just watch the movie and decide if I like it or not. I enjoyed seeing the first book come to life even though some things were changed.

I loved the southern accents and southern regional things, it was somehow more pronounced in the movie than in the book-I didn't hear the southern accents when I was reading the book.

The most important thing was that the romance and mystery of the storyline work and it did for me. The movie was made differently but was still cohesive for a young audience.

It is a shame that the movie didn't do better at the box office. I am guessing that the next three books won't be made into movies. If you liked the first movie, I recommend that you read the other books if no sequel movies are made.
